THE family of a “devoted grandmother” have paid tribute following her death in a four-car crash.

Norma Ann Morgan, 75, was killed in a collision which took place on the A472 in Hafodyrynys, near Pontypool, shortly after noon on September 23. Five other people were also taken to hospital following the collision, including two Gwent Police officers.

Ms Morgan was described as “a devoted wife, mother and grandmother” by her family in a statement released by Gwent Police yesterday.

“Norma was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who will be sorely missed by our family and all who knew her,” Ms Morgan’s family said. “This has left an enormous void within our family and we’re trying to come to terms with the sudden loss.

“A retired teacher at Pontypool’s West Monmouth School, she had recently celebrated her fiftieth wedding anniversary with her husband. We would like to thank all the emergency services for their valiant efforts at the scene of this tragic incident, and our thoughts and prayers are with the families of all those involved.”

The incident involved four cars – a white Nissan Juke, a grey Peugeot 508, a silver Vauxhall Insignia, and a Ford Focus police car.

Emergency services attended the incident at around 12.35pm and Ms Morgan, who was a passenger in the Peugeot, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gwent Police has confirmed that a 77-year-old man from the Llanfoist area, who was driving the Peugeot, is receiving treatment at the University Hospital of Wales, in Cardiff, is stable after sustaining injuries to his arm and back.

Two Gwent Police officers, a police constable and a community support officer, were also injured while travelling in the police car.

Both were taken to the University Hospital of Wales for treatment.

The police constable has since been discharged but the community support officer remains in hospital after sustaining life-changing injuries. Her condition is stable.

Two passengers travelling in the Nissan Juke, a 27-year-old woman and a two-year-old girl from the Blaina area, attended the Grange University Hospital in Cwmbran as a precaution for minor injuries.

A passenger in the Vauxhall, a 54-year-old woman from the Markham area, received treatment at the scene from paramedics.
