SIX FURTHER DEATHS AMID 2,270 NEW CASES

SIX more people have died with coronaviru­s in Wales according to latest figures by Public Health Wales.

Yesterday’s data also revealed there were 2,270 new positive cases, bringing the total number since the pandemic began to 349,570.

The latest seven-day infection rate across Wales based on the cases for every 100,000 people has consistent­ly climbed over the past week and has now reached 650.6 – up from 633.2 on Monday.

Due to reasons beyond their control, there were significan­t delays in Pubic Health Wales publishing Monday’s update on their dashboard which also went up on Tuesday.

The local authority with the highest infection rate in Wales is Neath Port Talbot with 927.3 cases per 100,000 people, followed by Rhondda Cynon Taf with 879.9 and Merthyr Tydfil with 865.3.

Positivite case rates across Wales have reached 15.4%, with Neath Port Talbot having the greatest proportion of tests coming back positive at 19.4%. Positivity rates are higher than 11% in all 22 local authority areas in Wales.

The areas of the country recording the highest numbers of Covid cases in the latest 24-hour period were Rhondda Cynon Taf with 228, Cardiff with 204, Swansea with 180,

Caerphilly with 177, Neath Port Talbot with 149, Carmarthen­shire with 126 and Newport with 123.

Areas with fewer than 50 new cases included Conwy with 47, Anglesey with 44 and Ceredigion with 33.

As of September 27, there were 595 people in general and acute hospital beds with coronaviru­s (confirmed, suspected, and recovering) – up from 564 – and 45 people in invasive ventilated beds , down from 46.

In terms of the vaccinatio­n rollout in Wales, the PHW figures show 2,374,984 people have received a first dose of the Covid vaccine and 2,220,762 have had both doses.
