More agony for Williams as he faces long lay-off

-

LUCKLESS Welsh international Owen Williams is facing yet another lay-off having picked up a “pretty bad” injury.

The three-times capped utility back has had a catalogue of setbacks on the fitness front over the past few years.

Those included a serious knee injury and then a hamstring tear suffered during the warm-up of Wales’s 2020 Six Nations clash with Ireland in Dublin, where he was due to be among the replacements.

His fortunes appeared to have changed with his summer move to Worcester as he made a really impressive start to the new season at No. 10.

But now he has been struck down again during Saturday’s 31-23 Premiership defeat at home to his former club Gloucester.

Williams, 29, slipped while going for a kick at goal in the second half and limped off instantly holding his hamstring.

He was then seen holding ice to the back of his right leg on the sidelines.

Worcester’s head coach, former Wales back-rower Jonathan Thomas, said: “It was a hamstring for Owen.

“As he went for the kick, he felt it go.

“We will have to see what happens over the next few days, but it looks pretty bad.”

Williams is ineligible for Wales under the WRU 60-cap rule, having opted to join Worcester rather than sign for a region following a spell in Japan.

The former Scarlets, Leicester and Gloucester playmaker had landed two successful shots at goal before suffering his injury at Sixways.

Worcester were also hit by the sending off of their captain Ted Hill for a tip-tackle on Gloucester’s Welsh fly-half Lloyd Evans.

Williams won the first of his Wales caps back in 2017.
