I recycle but this behaviour is crazy
I RECENTLY had about 35 bin bags of waste to get rid of. I booked a 10-minute van permit at Briton Ferry Recycling Centre. Arriving, I was directed to the small recycling area, instead of the skip area.
I was asked to open a bag. The first item inside was a plastic bottle. I was told it goes in the “plastic bottle bucket”. Next: Used kitchen roll, which had to go in a wheelie bin. Next: A small piece of polystyrene, which went to one side (as it had to go in a skip!) Next: A “snappy” bag: A different bucket!
At this point I got annoyed. The attendant just stood watching, now joined by two other workers. I said: “Are you seriously asking me empty 35 bin bags into these little boxes while everyone else waits?” His reply: “I am here all day”. I honestly thought I was on “You’ve been framed”!
I asked: “Why don’t you give me a hand?” The reply: “Haven’t you heard of Covid mate?” Followed by: “Have you got an issue with recycling? I responded: “I do recycle! - But this is crazy, and you know it is!
I said I would report this, asking the attendant his name, which he would not give. I then left, went to Llansamlet Recycling Centre, and was unloaded professionally, within five minutes.
I went back to Briton Ferry, asking for the manager. There wasn’t one! I spoke to the foreman, who told me I could have taken the waste “next door”. “But nobody does because Neath Council charge £140, so I send people to Swansea instead!”
Residents pay for these facilities. Something urgently needs changing! Barry Sutcliffe
