Wizards eye Drovers test after Quins are beaten

-

ABERAVON maintained their 100 per cent Premiership Cup record with a comfortable 26-3 success at Carmarthen Quins.

Jason Hyatt’s side have moved five points clear of Llandovery at the top of the Western conference.

And they have an opportunity to stretch that advantage when they host the Drovers next weekend.

“We recruited well in the summer and are confident of doing well this season,” said head coach Hyatt.

“It’s a tough league and anyone can beat anyone on any given day.

“But if we are consistent in our performances, then we should be able to compete well.”

Josh Batcup opened the scoring for the hosts with a straightforward penalty.

But that was as good as it got for the outgunned hosts.

Aberavon hit straight back when Iwan Temblett hit a tremendous line to touch down under the posts.

Dan Edwards added the extras for the visitors.

The Aberavon pack were in total control, with the Quins unable to cope with their power in the set-piece.

And the visitors extended their lead with a penalty try thanks to their scrum demolishing Carmarthen’s forwards five metres out from the line.

Edwards pushed the Wizards further ahead with a penalty from 35 metres, meaning they turned around with a commanding 17-3 lead.

To their credit, the Quins refused to throw in the towel and were far more competitive in the opening exchanges of the second half.

But the Wizards pack was just too strong for them, with Edwards extending their lead with another penalty.

The Quins began to apply pressure for the first time in the game, which resulted in Aberavon’s Sam Williams getting sent to the sin-bin for illegally killing the ball.

But the visitors held out with ease and finished the game in the ascendancy, with a further two penalties from Edwards ensuring they finished the game extremely comfortably, leaving the Quins to reflect on an insipid performance.
