Price is right as Charlie claims win for Vaughan

- Brian Lee

WEST Wales’ Charlie Price who, as I have said before, deserves more rides than he usually gets, gave Vale of Glamorgan trainer Tim Vaughan a welcome winner at Ffos Las last Saturday.

He won the Conditional Jockeys’ Mares Handicap Chase on the topweighted Oriental Cross, who got home by half-a-length from the Christian Williams-trained Barden Bella.

Versatile Charlie, well known in Arabian horse racing circles, has ridden winners on the flat, over the sticks and between-the-flags and it is a wonder to me that he is not made more use of by trainers throughout the land.

The big race of the day, the Potter Group Welsh Champion Handicap Hurdle, went to Tom Lacey’s Glory And Fortune, who, under Stan Sheppard, scored by four lengths from

Dans Le Vent, partnered by trainer Evan Williams’ daughter Isabel Williams.

Williams, who has saddled more winners at Ffos Las than any other trainer, won the opening Seel & Co Mares Maiden Hurdle with Current Mood, ridden by stable jockey Adam Wedge.

Christian Williams, one-time assistant trainer to Evan, took the David Lloyd Celebrating 75 Years Handicap Hurdle with his Uno Mas, who, partnered by amateur rider Mr Ellis Collier, won by 13 lengths from the Jonjo O’Neill -trained ManInTheShadows.

Former Western Mail racing editor Brian Radford informs me that he has a share in the syndicate-owned horse winner and he will be delighted with the horse’s success.

The second division of this race went to the well-backed In Rem, partnered by Chester Williams. Pembrokeshire’s James Bowen riding Nick Martin’s Leading Choice, a 16-1 chance, won the Fedwen Tentage Open National Hunt Flat race.

The same day at Market Rasen, Cardiff trainer Sam Thomas won the novices’ chase with Stolen Silver and Sean Bowen scored on Rafferty.

While twenty-four hours earlier at Fakenham, Evan Williams was successful with HowDYaLikeMeNow (Adam Wedge) and, at Uttoxeter, Richard Patrick notched-up a double on Lord Accord and Orchard Grove.

At Wincanton, Sean Bowen – who is having a cracking season – won on Mr Maffia.
