JD CYMRU PREMIER

-

GAVIN Chesterfield took all the plaudits last weekend when he took charge of Barry Town United for the 500th time, but the spotlight switched to one of his players this week when Kayne McLaggon was named as the JD Cymru Premier ‘Player of the Month’ for October.

The Barry Town skipper struck twice to help his side come from two goals down to earn a 3-3 draw at Bala Town last month and was also on target in the defeat at Flint Town United and scored in the Linnets’ away win over Caernarfon Town.

Now 31, McLaggon’s footballing life has come full circle since heading to the Southampton Academy from Barry Boys Comprehensive school. He played seven times for the Saints and won 15 international caps for Wales at U17 and U19 levels.

With 10 goals in all competitions this season McLaggon is leading by example and will be hoping to spearhead a first home league win since 11 September when Aberystwyth Town head to Jenner Park today. The visitors are one off the bottom with only three wins in 11 games to date this season, two of which have come on the road.

The manager of the month award for October went to Newtown’s Chris Hughes. His side faced bottom of the table Cefn Druids last night, while Bala Town welcomed Connah’s Quay Nomads to Maes Tegid for a dress rehearsal of their Nathaniel MG Cup semi-final on November 27.

Today sees second-placed Flint Town United host Penybont and unbeaten league leaders The New Saints welcome Haverfordwest County to Park Hall as they seek to extend their unbeaten league run to 12 matches.

The other game sees Cardiff Met, just clinging onto a top-six place, host Caernarfon Town in seventh. Christian Edwards’ side will be looking to hit back from their 5-0 drubbing by The New Saints in their last outing, while The Cofis need to end a three-match losing streak.
