18 more deaths and 2,171 new cases

A FURTHER 18 people have died with coronaviru­s in Wales according to the latest figures from Public Health Wales.

New figures published yesterday, which cover the latest 24-hour period, show the Covid-related death toll in Wales now stands at 6,260.

There were also 2,171 new positive cases recorded in the latest update, bringing the total number since the pandemic began to 463,279.

The latest seven-day infection rate across Wales based on the cases for every 100,000 people (for the seven days up to Friday) now stands at 510.4 – another drop from the 527.7 reported the previous day.

The local authority with the highest infection rate in Wales is still Vale of Glamorgan, with 705.9 cases per 100,000 population over seven days, closely followed by Torfaen with 705.6 and Caerphilly with 601.4.

The areas of the country recording the highest numbers of new Covid cases are Cardiff with 332, Swansea with 159, Vale of Glamorgan with 132, Rhondda Cynon Taf with 121, Carmarthen­shire with 112, Newport and Bridgend with 110 each, Powys with 103 and Caerphilly and Wrexham with 100 apiece.

Meanwhile, Flintshire had 89 new cases, Neath Port Talbot had 86, Gwynedd had 77, Torfaen had 72, Pembrokesh­ire had 65, Blaenau Gwent had 61, Monmouthsh­ire had 59, Conwy had 56, Denbighshi­re had 51 and Merthyr Tydfil had 44.

The local authoritie­s recording the fewest cases included Anglesey with 32 and Ceredigion with 23.

As of Tuesday, there were 816 people in general and acute hospital beds with coronaviru­s (confirmed, suspected, and recovering), a slight rise on the 802 reported the previous day.

There were 73 people in a ventilated intensive care bed with Covid-19 on Tuesday, a slight rise on the 72 people on Monday.

Yesterday Public Health Wales figures showed that 2,454,261 people have had one dose of the coronaviru­s vaccine and 2,249,934 have had both doses.

To date 555,322 people have received their Covid booster vaccine, according to PHW, including more than two-thirds of care home residents (75.7%), two-thirds of healthcare workers (68%), more than half of care home workers (58.6%) and over two-thirds of those over 80 years old (70.4%).
