Saints left feeling flat after Aber loss

ABERYSTWYTH claimed a shock 1-0 victory over The New Saints in Tuesday night’s JD Cymru Premier League action.

TNS still remain top of the division despite a first defeat, but they wouldn’t have expected to take nothing from their visit to Aberystwyth, who only have Cefn Druids below them in the table.

John Owen scored the only goal for the home side in the 85th minute when a loose ball from Danny Redmond was intercepted by Sam Phillips who, in turn, picked out Owen with a well-timed ball.

The Aberystwyth striker made no mistake once inside the area, calmly slotting the ball beneath the outrushing Paul Harrison to spark wild celebrations among the home supporters.

TNS had more than their fair share of moments, but they couldn’t convert and Owen showed them how it should be done with five minutes to go.

TNS head coach Anthony Limbrick said: “It’s obviously disappointing to lose the game. I feel we had enough chances, two or three one-on-ones, and one on the line which wasn’t given.

“It didn’t go for us on the night and Aberystwyth were more clinical than us. Massive credit to the opposition – I thought they were fantastic. We knew it would be a tricky game and I said it to the players. We didn’t take our chances and paid the price at the end.”

It was a disappointing result for TNS and they now have to stew on defeat for more than a week because there is no league action this weekend.

The JD Cymru Premier League returns next on Friday, November 19.

In the other games to take place on Tuesday, Penybont beat Cardiff Met 2-1 at home with goals from Mael Davies and Lewis Harling.

Haverfordwest and Barry shared a 1-1 draw while Connah’s Quay Nomads came away with a narrow 1-0 win over Caernarfon Town. A Neal Eardley stunner put The Nomads 1-0 up in the 69th minute. Former Nomad Rob Hughes saw red for Caernarfon in injury time at the end of the second half.

Elsewhere, Newtown and Bala Town were the division’s high scorers.

The two teams shared a thrilling 3-3 draw.

Bottom side Cefn Druids had Niall Flint sent off in the sixth minute of added time as they drew 1-1 at home to Flint Town United. Mitchell Williams gave the Druids the lead in just the fourth minute, but Michael Wilde’s 77th minute strike earned a share of the spoils before Flint saw red.
