COVID INFECTION RATE CREEPING UP AGAIN

A FURTHER two people have died with coronaviru­s in Wales according to latest figures from Public Health Wales (PHW).

The data published yesterday covers the 24-hour period up to 9am on November 15 and shows the total number of Covid-related deaths in Wales now stands at 6,297.

There were also 1,921 new positive cases recorded, bringing the total number since the pandemic began to 477,295.

The latest seven-day infection rate across Wales, based on the cases for every 100,000 people (for the seven days up to November 11) now stands at 491.5 – up from 482.1 on Monday.

The local authority with the highest infection rate in Wales is Vale of Glamorgan with 649.8 cases per 100,000 people, followed by Gwynedd with 604.5 and Torfaen with 586.4.

The test positivity rate across Wales is at 19.2%, a slight rise from 19% on Monday.

The areas of the country recording the highest numbers of new Covid cases are Cardiff with 192, Swansea with 161, Gwynedd with 130, Rhondda Cynon Taf 126, Caerphilly with 121, Neath Port Talbot and Newport with 107 each and Carmarthen­shire with 102.

Meanwhile, Flintshire had 94 new cases, Vale of Glamorgan had 86, Monmouthsh­ire had 69, Bridgend had 66, Powys had 63, Conwy had 62, Pembrokesh­ire had 59, and Denbighshi­re had 57.

The local authoritie­s recording the fewest cases included Torfaen with 45, Anglesey and Blaenau Gwent with 37 eachand Ceredigion with 17.

As of November 11 there were 733 people in general and acute hospital beds with coronaviru­s (confirmed, suspected, and recovering) – up from 732 – and 67 people in a ventilated intensive care bed with Covid-19, a drop on the 73 reported the day before.

The PHW figures also show that 2,459,583 people have now received one dose of the coronaviru­s vaccine and 2,253,495 have been given both doses.

To date, 637,169 people have received their Covid booster vaccine, according to PHW, including three-quarters of care home residents (76.6%), more than two-thirds of over 80s (73.7%) and healthcare workers (69.5%) and over half of all care home workers (60.1%).
