Dedicated resources are also available to give interested applicants a taste of what working in the different roles and sectors of the industry could entail.

Businesses that recognise how much of a valuable asset their employees are engaging with Food Workforce Wales to hire the right people to support business growth plans.

‘WE’RE A BIG LOCAL EMPLOYER’

Pie and pastry giants Peter’s Food, in Caerphilly, is one example of a big employer that is committed to investing in the people that make up its business.

Managing director Mike Grimwood said: “We have 650 colleagues onsite, and more importantly for us, everybody is employed. We don’t have agency workers. We’re a big local employer. And we think that if we want people to be committed to us, then we need to be committed to them also.

“The food industry is a fantastic business to get into. All our factory managers started on our bakery lines and have built their careers within the business. It’s a place where you can develop and fulfil your potential.”

Peter’s Food training officer Deborah Jones explained the importance of investing in people.

“It makes them more confident in their roles, and they feel more valued because they’re able to progress and gain further knowledge,” she said.

The company’s health and safety officer Dafydd Davies encouraged people to consider a career in the food and drink industry.

“For anyone thinking about coming into this industry, more than anything, we offer job security, and also the

development within your role,” he said.

If you view the noticeboard, the company is after three new recruits at the moment.

It needs a meat room operator, a hygiene operator and a production/packing operator.

All the positions are temporary and are based in Bedwas, with salaries ranging from £8.91 per hour to £10.29 an hour.
