-

A MAN jailed for repeatedly r sexually assaulting a child refused to accept any responsibility for his crimes, c forcing his victim to endure his trial.

Donald Gordon, of Aeron Place, Bargoed, was sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court for five counts of sexual assault of a girl under the age of 13 by touching.

Gordon, 62, pictured, was found guilty by a jury after the trial was held at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court for the offences, which took place over a period of five years against one victim.

On Friday, April 1, Gordon was sentenced to five years in prison.

Speaking after the sentencing Detective Constable Samantha Davies, who oversaw the case, said: “Without the brave testimony of Donald Gordon’s victim we would not have been able to bring him before the courts to face justice.”

DC Davies continued: “He refused to accept responsibility for his crimes, forcing his victim to go through the ordeal of a trial. The courage, resilience and strength that the victim has shown throughout the investigation has been truly inspirational.

“We understand how difficult it can be for victims to take the first step and speak out about the horrific abuse they have endured. We take all allegations of sexual assault, particularly against children, very seriously.”

Gordon will remain on the sexual offenders register indefinitely. DC Davies said anyone considering coming forward to report allegations of sexual assault will receive “a whole range of support”.

“There are support services for victims of sexual abuse, both nonrecent and current and for adults and children,” she added.
