Think carefully about these bike routes

-

I READ with interest the suggestion of new cycle routes within West Cross, and am appalled that anyone would suggest a cycle route/lane on Linden Avenue.

This is a bus route and there is barely enough room for heavy vehicles to get through, let alone adding a cycle lane to the narrow pavements or the road.

As many of the properties do not have an area to pull in off-road, the only place to park is in the street. What do you suppose will happen if vehicle owners start parking on the pavement?

Perhaps the council should ask the bus company for its views before putting high-flying ideas into operation.

It seems while the council wants people to use public transport, it has not got the foresight to actually provide safe roads on which to implement a decent scheme for both cyclists and bus users.

If buses are unable to use roads like Linden Avenue, it will mean that those living at the top of West Cross will be in for a long walk up a very steep hill, as the bus company will probably curtail the 3A half-hourly bus service.

Cycle routes/lanes on major roads are fine if there is room to accommodate both.

As it is, some of the speedier cyclists still use the main arterial road from Mumbles to Swansea rather than going at a more sedate rate on the cycle routes provided along the seafront.

And, as an afterthought, why not fine cyclists who still insist on going through traffic-lights when they are on red?

If bicycles were sold with visible registration numbers this would surely bring in as much revenue as car fines.
