Future looks bright for Swans, says boss Martin

-

RUSSELL Martin insists Swansea City have a bright future under him despite throwing away a 4-1 lead against Reading on Easter Monday.

“If you look at where we were at the start of the season to where we are now, I think everyone can see a big difference and a big improvement.

“Look at how much players like Ben Cabango have come on, I feel so proud of the players when they play as they did during that first hour at Reading,” he said.

“We played some outstanding stuff, I enjoyed watching us, which is the whole point. We were brought here for a longterm project. I am convinced that this club is the best place for us, and we are the right fit for this club.”

Swansea have four games left, against the promotion pushing quartet of Middlesbrough, Bournemouth, Nottingham Forest and Queens Park Rangers.

■ The Swans have joined Amnesty International’s ‘Football Welcomes’ campaign.

Celebrating its fifth anniversary, the campaign aims to welcome refugees and people seeking asylum. By looking at players who are themselves from refugee backgrounds, it shows the power of football in bringing people together.

The club will be dedicating Saturday’s match against Middlesbrough to the campaign, by inviting refugee families to the match as special guests, alongside local MP Carolyn Harris.

She said: “I’m delighted to see Swansea City joining other clubs to be part of the Football Welcomes initiative.

“The current crisis in Ukraine is a stark reminder of just how important it is that those who seek refuge are welcomed into our communities and offered support.

“Football brings people of all backgrounds together every week and so inviting those who have fled conflict to join fans at local matches is a perfect way to show that support.”
