Dragons’ promotion jolt

-

WREXHAM missed a golden opportunity to close the gap on National League leaders Stockport County as they fell to defeat at Woking.

County had earlier lost 2-1 at Yeovil Town, but the Dragons failed to capitalise – despite taking the lead in the first half.

Stockport retain their sevenpoint lead at the top of the standings and with only five matches remaining it now looks as though Wrexham’s best chance of promotion is via the play-offs.

The match started badly for the Dragons as in-form full-back Callum McFadzean limped off in the sixth minute to be replaced by Liam McAlinden.

David Longe-King had a halfchance for Woking but he could only head wide of Christian Dibble’s goal. The Dragons started to grow into the game and Paul Mullin had a shot blocked before Luke Young fired just wide.

Mullin then played a delightful ball into the path of Jordan Davies, who failed to get the ball under control and the chance went begging. James Jones then struck the crossbar as he did well to shift the ball on to his left foot.

The visitors did take the lead a minute before half-time as McAlinden looked to play the ball across goal but it took a wicked deflection off Tyreke Johnson and nestled into the bottom corner. Jones had another effort at goal before Davies’ shot was turned over by Craig Ross.

But Woking worked themselves level when Davies was adjudged to have handled in the box and Max Kretzschmar converted the penalty.

That seemed to knock the stuffing out of the Reds and they fell behind in the 86th minute as Woking broke on the right and Jamar Loza slotted home the winner.
