Title joy for Bluebirds flop Cornelius

CARDIFF City flop Andreas Cornelius has won the Turkish Super Lig with Trabzonspor, writes HARRISON KIDD

And the Danish striker, who signed for Cardiff City in 2014, scored 15 goals to help his side win the title, which enabled the forward to win the golden boot.

It’s fair to say that Cornelius’ time didn’t go to plan with Cardiff; the striker signed for £8million from FC Kobenhavn, which was a club record at the time, but only managed to play 11 games for the Welsh capital side over a seven-month period and didn’t score one goal during his brief stint at the club. However, Cornelius is enjoying a much better experience at Trabzonspor. The Danish striker signed from Parma for £4million helped the Turkish outfit win the

Super Lig for the first time in 38 years. The 29-year-old is loved by his new supporters, who call him “The King of the North”.

Their title triumph prompted wild scenes, with thousands partying on into the night on the streets of Trabzon.

Cornelius, who also featured for Atalanta and Bordeaux over the course of his career, has previously spoken about his time at Cardiff and admitted it didn’t work out for him in the English top flight.

“I remember Cardiff was a big experience for me,” said Cornelius. “It was a good opportunity for me to go from Copenhagen to the Premier League and I was excited, but a lot of things happened and it didn’t work out. Maybe I went to Cardiff too early in my career, I don’t know.”

Cornelius is a Denmark international who’s played 37 games for his country and scored seven goals in the process. The striker featured in Denmark’s Euro 2020 squad where he was involved in the round-of-16 win against Wales.

Cardiff City have confirmed New Balance as their new kit supplier for the 2022/23 season.

The Bluebirds have become the first Championship side to sign such a deal with the American company, who currently supply kits to European giants such as FC Porto and AS Roma.

The length of contract is not clear, but New Balance are poised to take over at some point in July 2022.

It’s expected that the release of the new kit will be around the same time.
