Morgan aims for lucky Sevens as he plots a new beginning

-

WALES centre Tyler Morgan will have an opportunity to remind would-be suitors of his international quality after the announcement of his imminent release from the Scarlets.

The 26-year-old who was once tipped for very big things is among nine players who will leave the Llanelli-based region at the end of the season.

But this weekend Morgan has the chance to make a statement when he takes the field for his international debut in the abbreviated code of the game, lining up for Wales in the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series in Toulouse.

Wales take on France on Friday afternoon before waiting eight hours to tackle Fiji and completing their pool fixtures against Kenya on Saturday.

Morgan hasn’t played much this season, with just two competitive outings for the Scarlets in 2021-22, but his pedigree isn’t in doubt, with Warren Gatland picking him amid injuries to start a World Cup quarter-final against South Africa in 2015. Around that time, the Newport-born player was rated one of the sharpest midfield prospects around.

Now he’s just happy to be lacing up his boots again.

Describing his inclusion as “another boost” to the squad, Wales Sevens head coach Richie Pugh said: “Tyler’s itching to play.

“When I invited him into the camp he jumped at the opportunity and it’s just great having someone of his calibre and experience and what he’s achieved so far in his career. It’s great to have that experience around the squad.”

RGC 1404’s Afon Bagshaw is back on Wales Sevens duty for the first time since 2019, with the squad stronger for his inclusion as they negotiate a tricky schedule against testing opponents.

Wales Sevens squad for Toulouse (May 20-22): Luke Treharne (Wales 7s), Tyler Morgan (Scarlets), Morgan Sieniawski (Wales 7s), Afon Bagshaw (RGC), Tom Brown (Wales 7s), Callum Williams (Scarlets), Owen Jenkins (Dragons), Tom Williams (Wales 7s), Morgan Williams (Wales 7s), Iwan Pyrs jones (Cardiff) Lloyd Lewis (Wales 7s), Ewan Rosser (Dragons), Cole Swannack (Pontypridd).
