Drunk assaulted woman near club

ADRUNK man sexually assaulted a woman outside a social club while his victim was trying to help him get a taxi, a court has heard.

Cory Melville groped his victim before putting his hand up her dress and assaulting her in the street.

Earlier that night the carpet fitter had behaved in a “sexually obnoxious” way to other women in the club, asking them for oral sex.

When police interviewed the defendant, he said he could not remember being in the bar or anything about the incident outside due to the amount of cider he had drunk, but he said that if he had done it he was “embarrassed” by his actions.

Swansea Crown Court heard the assault happened in June 2021 when the victim was with a group of female

friends at a social club in the county.

Megan Jones, prosecuting, said during the course of the evening the defendant drunkenly approached the group and began asking for oral sex – he was told to go away. He subsequently went into the women’s toilets asking for a taxi, and was pushed out of the loos by a woman using the facilites.

Outside the club, the victim said she would help Melville get a number for a taxi firm, and while she was using her phone Melville “slouched” against her, moved his had up her thigh, and then put his hand up her dress and sexually assaulted her.

The matter was reported to the police, and in his subsequent interview Melville said he had drunk six or seven pints of Carling Dark Fruits cider on the night in question and could not remember being in the social club.

He said he had no memory of the incident, adding that if he had done it he was “embarrassed” at his behaviour.

Cory Melville, 24, of Watkin Street, Mount Pleasant, Swansea, had previously pleaded guilty to sexual assault by penetration when he appeared in the dock for sentencing.

With a one-quarter discount for his guilty plea, Melville was sentenced to 30 months in prison. He will serve up to half that period in custody before being released on licence to serve the remainder in the community.

Melville will be a registered sex offender for the rest of his life.
