Cuthbert devastated by another injury blow

-

WALES international Alex Cuthbert says he is “absolutely devastated” about his latest injury setback and admitted it left him wanting to “crawl up in a hole and go away”.

The Ospreys wing was set to cross for his second try against Munster last Friday when he pulled up with a hamstring injury with just moments left in the game.

He was visibly upset by what had happened as he lay in disbelief on the turf, having only made his return from a year on the treatment table last month.

Cuthbert underwent a scan on the injury on Monday night, the results of which are yet to be disclosed.

But appearing on the SportIn Wales podcast this week, he said he was still trying to come to terms with the bodyblow as he prepares for another spell on the sidelines.

“I’m absolutely devastated mate, I’m not going to lie,” he told host Geraint Hardy.

“I’ve worked incredibly hard the last year and a bit to come back and for it to happen the way it did, I still haven’t really processed it properly.

“But I’ve been in the situation many times and obviously the mental strength and stuff sort of comes.

“All I can really do is get the results from the scan and go from there really.”

Reflecting on what happened, the Wales star added: “I was literally strolling in for a try, last minute and then ‘bang’, it literally just went.

“I tried to carry on and then I guess I processed what had actually happened.

“I was like ‘Oh my God’. I tried not to believe it, that’s why I tried to carry on a little bit. But then after two strides I was gone, there was no chance.

“Then I realised what had happened and you get this flood of emotion of like ‘ Oh my God, I can’t believe what’s happened, why me, I’ve been out for so long and I’ve let the boys down’. Just things like that, everything goes through your mind.

“When I was lying there, I didn’t even feel my hamstring but all those things were going through my head. I just wanted to crawl up in a hole and go away, it was that bad.”

He continued: “I’ve had plenty of messages which I appreciate and a couple of funny ones.

“When I got back, I had a couple of messages saying ‘your bloody hamstring has got me £500!’. They had Ospreys to lose by less than seven or something like that.

“You’ve just got to take it with a pinch of salt.

“That’s sport, sometimes it just doesn’t work out.”
