Bulut deserves more time, says Bluebirds legend

DANNY Gabbidon believes Erol Bulut deserves more time in the Cardiff City hotseat – but stresses that he needs to improve.

Bulut’s contract, which comes to an end this summer, has been a major talking point over the past few weeks as Cardiff limp towards the end of the Championship season.

Uncertainty over his future appears to be permeating through to the players, although the boss himself has been keen to not use it as an excuse for some poor results in recent weeks.

And it reared again over the weekend as Cardiff slumped to a 3-1 defeat at home to Hull City.

A decision must be made one way or another, and Gabbidon admits things need addressing.

“The manager needs to know if he stays as well,” Gabbidon said.

“Things have to improve, in terms of the style of play, but I think we did see that at the start of the season.

“My disappointment with that is if you’re trying to change the style of play, at this point now they should be even better at what they’re doing and not worse.

“So that’s how it’s gone this season. As it’s gone on you’ve thought the team will get better and closer to what the manager wants.

“But it’s actually gone a little bit the other way. In terms of that, the manager will know he needs to improve if he stays next season.

“But I think if you weigh everything up. I don’t see why he shouldn’t be given more time to build on what he’s done this season.”

Meanwhile, fellow Cardiff legend Nathan Blake has said the club will never achieve success unless the ownership model at the top alters.

Vincent Tan is the sole decisionmaker, and the entire fan base is hinging on a will-he won’t-he call on the future of manager Erol Bulut.

If Tan decides not to renew Bulut’s contract, Cardiff will be on the lookout for their sixth permanent manager in three-and-a-half years.

Blake points out that if this cycle continues, nothing will change and success will not be achieved.

The former Bluebirds striker told the BBC: “Most fans know my position. You can’t get success running a club the way it’s being run.

“You will get short-term success, like we had under Neil Warnock, a one-off when all things came together and we played some really good football at times.

“But that doesn’t happen often. “If you are running a football club, your board, governance, recruitment, scouting, everything needs to be in place and as professional as it can be.

“Waiting for this all-seeing, Wizard of Oz-type character to make a decision, it’s crazy.

“I don’t think you can look at the three gentlemen at the top of the club and say they get decisions right more often than they get them wrong.

“Mehmet (Dalman) has spoken about having made many mistakes – and that’s after a decade of being at the club.

“I don’t expect anything to change. I just think that is the way it is.

“Unless the ownership model changes, nothing will change. Expect more of the same.”
