Wrexham star won’t be apologising for ‘hate the King’ song

-

WREXHAM’S James McClean says he makes no apology for singing an anti-monarchy song during the club’s promotion celebrations on Saturday.

The Dragons confirmed their return to League One with a thumping 6-0 win over Forest Green Rovers on Saturday, with McClean seen joining in with supporters as they sang a song about how the winger “hates the f ***** g King”.

McClean, an outspoken Irish republican, confirmed a newspaper report of what happened on social media on Tuesday night.

In a social media post, he shared a screenshot of the story and wrote: “Is this correct? Absolutely, and I also sang along at the top of my lungs.”

The 34-year-old then added: “Do I make any apologies for doing so? Absolutely not.”

The incident comes just a few weeks after Prince William visited the Racecourse Ground on St David’s Day to meet players and staff, including manager Phil Parkinson and players Ben Tozer and Luke Young.

Hollywood co-owner Rob McElhenney was also there to present William with a shirt, and the pair shared a drink together in the Turf pub next to the ground.

At the time, William said: “It’s a great success story you’re building here, everything you’ve started and achieved it’s fantastic, so onwards and upwards – it’s exciting.

“And anyone who’s a true football fan wants to see you do well.”

King Charles himself also paid the club a visit to the club in 2022, meeting actor Ryan Reynolds.

McClean has faced almost constant criticism and abuse for his political views over the years, including his refusal to wear a Remembrance Day poppy on his shirt.

The winger hails from Derry, where in 1972 British soldiers shot and killed 13 protesters during the Bloody Sunday massacre. A further victim died later.

McClean has made 42 appearances for the Dragons since joining from Wigan Athletic last August, scoring four goals.
