Drunk man sexually assaults girl, 14, at bus stop

A DRUNK man sexually assaulted a 14-year-old girl at a bus stop and threatened her with a raised fist when she tried to escape.

Colin Chitava, 42, attacked his teenage victim in Newport at 10.30pm on June 17, 2021, when she was alone and waiting for a friend.

A sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court heard the victim was waiting near Newport railway station when the defendant a nearby pub.

He approached the victim and called her “beautiful”. She tried to leave, but the defendant pushed her back down and began aggressive­ly kissing her neck.

Chitava then grabbed the victim’s thigh and he put his hand underneath her jumper to feel her breasts.

A teenager passing by on a scooter told the defendant to get off the victim, which distracted the defendant.

The victim tried to get up, but Chitava

pushed her down, threatened to “hurt her really badly” and raised his fist at her.

She left the bus stop and walked to the nearby Admiral building where she told a security guard she had been sexually assaulted. He let her into the building as the defendant loitered outside.

After he left, the victim was picked up by her mother.

The police were contacted and the defendant was arrested on September 22, 2021. He denied the offence, claiming what happened was consensual.

Chitava, of Buttermere Way, Newport, was found guilty of sexually assaulting a child and sentenced to three years’ imprisonme­nt, minus 52 days he has spent on curfew.

He was also made subject to sex offender notificati­on requiremen­ts indefinite­ly.
