Dip into October sale to find unique items

INCLUDED in Bearnes Hampton and Littlewood’s Antiques & Interiors auction on Tuesday, September 29 is a classic bronze figure. The figure is after the antique and depicts David, which would have been bought by wealthy gentlemen in Italy whilst on the Grand Tour during the 19th century. They are a form of early tourist wares reminding the young gentlemen of statues and figures they would have seen in Florence, Rome, Naples and the like. The figure is 37c.m high and is expected to realise in the region of £100-150*.

A super idea for present is a silver ink well and dip pen and there is a wonderful example included in this auction, made by Robert Pringle & Sons, it was assayed in Chester in 1908. It comes with its original fitted case also included is a silver bottle coaster for any wine lover. The lot is estimated to fetch between £80-120*.

A popular myth is that any Coronation wares relating to Edward VIII are rare. This is not so; factories were producing hundreds of commemorative wares long before the coronation and were readily available in most shops. A collection of mugs commemorating his coronation are also to be included in the auction with a modest estimate of £30-50*.

For all those long-suffering husbands out there how about a Royal Worcester candle snuffer modelled as Mr Job Caudle. Mr and Mrs Caudle were characters from Punch magazine originally created by Douglas Jarrold who stated that “Mr Caudle as a man put on this earth simply to listen to the endless complaints and lectures he receives from his wife.” After his wife’s death he could not sleep because he missed the sound of her voice, he is modelled wearing a sleeping cap and a blanket wrapped around his neck. The snuffer is 8cm. tall and is expected to realise £60-80*.

Another interesting trifle that will go under the hammer next Tuesday is a Bilston enamel patch box. This small box has a hinged lid decorated with a recumbent King Charles spaniel. Patch boxes were usually rectangular though sometimes oval used mostly as a receptacle for beauty patches to disguise blemishes of the skin, especially in the 18th century. They have become highly collectable of the past years and this particular example is expected to fetch £80-120*.
