Contrasting use of oils lead the way in today’s online auction
MICHAEL Bowman’s online auction at 2pm today offers two very contrasting treatments of landscape painting in oils. The first is an old oil on panel, probably late 18th or early 19th century in date which copies a known work by the illustrious French 17th century artist Claude ‘Lorrain’ (Claude Gellee c.1600-1682).
A soft radiant light captures the classical scene entitled ‘The Embarkation of Carlo and Ubaldo’, which measures 14.5” x 17”and is believed to possibly be by a follower of the 18th century Flemish artist, Hendrik Frans van Lint. The original Claude oil now hangs in the Art Gallery of Ontario, donated by a military family in appreciation of the assistance given by Canadian troops during both World Wars. The oil on offer today, therefore, is possibly a copy of a copy! It carries a tempting estimate of £400-600.
There can be no doubting the provenance of the contemporary landscape signed by John Hitchens (born 1940). Entitled ‘Land Shades’ and measuring an impressive 20” x 40”, an inscription on the reverse advises to ‘Please keep under Glass, John Hitchens, The Old School, Byworth, Petworth’. This is the first time on the market since being purchased in 1970 and expectations lie in the region of £1,000-1,500.
One of the more eye-catching entries in the Oriental and Eastern works of art is a bold enamelled Chinese bronze jardiniere decorated with a trio of fearsome Shishis with ambitions of £8001,200.
The jewellery section features an elaborate diamond panel bracelet, probably early 20th century Portuguese, which appears to be in its original case and invites bids of £1,5002,000.
There is no public viewing nor attendance for this auction, but all lots are illustrated online. Call on 01626 324071 or visit michaeljbowman.co.uk.
