Take time to discover some intriguing items
PIERS Motley Auctions has a 2,000 plus lot sale taking place on March on 29,30, and 31. The auctioneer, Piers Motley, was fortunate enough to have been brought up with some interesting clocks including William Stumbels’ longcase regulator and been fortunate enough to see the Kingsbridge Stumbels, which is in private hands, and of course the 13-foot giant at Powderham.
While Stumbels is the best known clock maker from Totnes his predecessor William Clement is also well known. There is an early black Japanned eight-day striking example which has never been restored and is expected to make £700-1000. There is also a moon phase longcase and another engraved with a lion and with rocking eyes.
Starting the third day and a future classic is a Moto Guzzi V7 CAFE Motorbike with just over £1500 miles on the clock and a bargain at £3500-4000.
The first day is filled with jewellery and silver including period jewellery such as a 19th century sapphire and pearl ring with an estimate of just £100180 (+21.6%B.P.), or a Georgian turquoise and pearl set pendant expected to make £300-380.
For something more modern an early Catherine Best tanzanite and diamond 18ct gold necklace and earring set is a little more punchy at £40006000.
The second day has some interesting modern art including Breon O’ Casey (1928 - 2011), Dartington Art School and St Ives Artist. His Purple Bird with Silver Circles, linocut print on handmade paper 19 x 14cm, is estimated at £600-800.
Last sale a William Scott lithograph entitled ‘Summer Suite with Green Predominating’ was sold for £3000, and there is another example in this sale which is estimated at £2500-3000.
