Sale of pictures and decorative art
THE Truro Auction Centre holds its next specialised Auction on Friday, April 23 which is a Picture and Decorative Art Sale. This is a small online auction with a difference whereby all the pictures and decorative items have been received from one local private estate and many lots still have their original receipts dating back to the 1970s and ‘80s.
It’s so unusual and refreshing to see a small concise sale like this with every lot fresh to the market and a good proportion of lots being of local interest.
Two gouaches by St Ives artist Roger Hilton will certainly appeal, both being abstract figure studies and are signed with initials, one dated 1974 and the other 1973. These show typical vibrant colours and expect bids in the region of £1000-£1500 each.
Other local artists also feature include a Bryan Pearce ink drawing of “Jug Fruit and Peppers” which is signed and labelled 1971; three small works by Fred Yates including two oil on boards depicting interior scenes with figures; or a large oil on canvas by Moreen Moss entitled “Paris ‘80” still having its original Newlyn Orion label dated 1980 and receipt.
The 250 lot sale also features more traditional pictures including a circular late 19th Century oil on canvas by
Alfred Green depicting a sleeping farm boy amid animals which expects £200£300; four small pencil studies by Sir Peter Scott depicting pin-tail ducks carrying the original studio exhibition label for 1996 could sell for between £60-£90 whilst two sketches by Robert Lenkiewicz include a pen and ink study of a horse bearing the studio label or a pencil study of figures in conversation, both with a pre-sale estimate of £100-£150 each.
A limited edition Terry Frost tie which is stitch signed and framed with certificate should attract interest; a copper model of a Newly fishing lugger by Mark Penrose measures 13” long certainly shouts quality; whilst a St Ives Leach Pottery circular bowl by Trevor Corser measures 6½” diameter expects £30-£50.
A large selection of art related books will also be sold on April 23 including three volumes relating to St Ives artist Breon O’Casey having a 2009 signed example; a 2007 Fred Yates book with original dustjacket expects £10-£20.
