Beautiful creatures

-

IF you are an animal lover then there are plenty of lots to interest you at Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood’s Antiques & Interiors sale on Tuesday, April 27.

The first are two early 20th century Austrian cold painted pottery models of collie dogs, each approx 22cm long. They very much mirror the Berman type cold painted bronze models and date from a similar period. They carry an estimate of £40-60*.

Slightly younger is an Art Deco period lamp with central pale blue glass globe flanked by seated Alsatian dogs mounted on a marble base. Art Deco never seems to lose its attractiveness to people and the lamp is expected to fetch £40-50*.

From the same Art Deco period comes a French three-piece clock garniture, surmounted by an Alsatian dog. With rouge marble case, the French movement has a stunning dial with typical Art Deco angular Arabic numerals, very Hercule Poirot, and it’s estimated at £80-100*.

The next faithful hound is cast in iron and forms a door stop. The recumbent dog is seated with his tail beside his paw and looking backward.

He sits on a stepped plinth base and measures 36cm. high. Heavy enough to hold most doors back and sold with a warming pan it is hoped he will fetch £40-50*.

Our final offering of dogs is from the Orient with a pair of gilt metal Buddhist guardian lion dogs.

Modelled with open mouth and teeth, having a flared mane and wearing a decorative breastplate, each figure stands 33cm high. They were originally meant to safe guard Buddhist temples and shrines. They are estimated at £50-70*.

Our final offering has nothing to do with dogs but is just a lovely example of Victorian workmanship. The silver wine goblet was made by Richards & Brown and was assayed in London in 1871. It has banded engraved foliate decoration on a spreading foot, its 17cm high and is expected to fetch £50-70*.

* Lots include buyer’s premium of 25.2% incl. VAT @ 20%
