Pilgrims’ tribute to ‘keeper Miller

TRIBUTES have been paid to former Plymouth Argyle goalkeeper Alan Miller following his death at the age of 51.

Miller played 15 games for the Pilgrims during a loan spell from Arsenal during the 1988/89 season before going on to feature for his parent club in the Premier League.

He was an unused substitute in Arsenal’s FA Cup and League Cup wins in 1993 before starring in the Premier League for Middlesbro­ugh and Coventry City.

The Essex-born footballer also had spells with West Bromwich Albion, Birmingham City, Huddersfie­ld Town. Grimsby Town, Blackburn Rovers, Bristol City and St Johnstone during his 14-year playing career.

News of Miller’s death was confirmed late on Thursday night and a number of tributes have been paid from around the football world, including a message from Argyle.

The club tweeted: “The club is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of former Pilgrim Alan Miller.

“Our thoughts are with his family and friends.”

Lee Dixon, a former team-mate of Miller at Arsenal, was among the many other people to pay tribute to the goalkeeper.

“Devastated to hear the news that our team mate Alan Miller has passed away,” the former England defender said on Twitter.

“He was one of life’s good guys. What a man.

“Heart of gold. RIP my friend.” Michael Thomas, another former Arsenal team-mate, write: “So sadden to hear off my ex teammate’s passing Alan Miller.

“He was a big and loveable character in our dressing room. A shy Essex boy! Not.”

Former Jan Aage Fjortoft also took to Twitter to pay tribute to Miller, saying: “I have just been told that my former teammate at @Boro, Alan Miller, has passed away. Alan was one of the “good guys”.
