Collectables were in demand

-

ANTIQUE silver, general jewellery and collectables were in hot demand at the Summer Collectors Auction. Over 350 lots came under the hammer on August 11 featuring a great selection of silver principally from two Devon estates.

With several hundred online bidders and some very good local bidders in the saleroom it was no surprise that many estimates were left behind.

The headline lot for the silver section was a rare provincial silver coffee pot by James Strang of Exeter dating to 1787. This attracted a lot of interest and sold for an impressive £2,200. The next lot was an 18th century pot by Robert Makepeace of Newcastle, selling well at £800. The silver section continued to sell very well and a ‘find’ in a job lot was rewarded to the vendor when a Georgian silver nutmeg grater sold for £280.

Other highlights in the sale included an Asprey, Art Deco compact box in silver and gilt selling well over price guide to a local bidder for £450. Several gold coins all found bidders notably £2,300 for a set of four 1887 Jubilee gold coins including a five pound gold.

A neat 19th century French carriage clock by ‘Bolviller, Paris’, sold for £680 whilst in the furniture section a rare Edwardian mahogany campaign desk, by Chapman of London seemed a good buy at £550 as did the well-kept fully fitted 19th century mahogany apothecary’s cabinet at £460.

A collection of edged military weapons raised a handsome £4,500 featuring a top price of £1600 for a WW2 Pattern One Fairbairn Sykes Commando Knife.

With very few lots left behind it was another buoyant sale at Plymouth Auction Rooms which has already made a start on collecting lots for the next sale in October.
