Banksy replica at September art auction
IT’S great to hear that at last the Plymouth Colour Collective is holding an art exhibition in Plymouth. After two cancellations it will finally go ahead at the Ocean Studios at the Royal William Yard between September 1 and 19. On display will be works by Brian Pollard, Lou C glass, Henry Sells, Arth Lawr and Serendipity. Work by each of these artist has become increasingly popular and collectable. The Plymouth Auction Rooms will be offering some examples at its upcoming art sale.
Three early works by Brain Pollard, whilst small in size, are quite charming and include lot 202, a ‘View To The Lizard’, measuring 12cm x 22cm, and also slightly larger lot 201, ‘Cornish Bay’, each dating from the 1980s. It’s clear to see how Brian’s art has evolved over the years. The estimates are attractive at just £100 to £200 each.
The perfect local art glass subject by Lou C is lot 208, titled ‘Plymouth Hoe - Fireworks’, at £150 to £200 this could prove to be a good investment. Works by Arth Lawr have attracted regular bidders from the US and lot 205, ‘A View of Plymouth’, a neat naïve painting, 15cm x 15cm, should easily sell for over £100.
There are many other contemporary art works in the September 15 auction but causing the most debate is an artwork by graffiti and street artist Banksy.
Back in 2005 Banksy placed a small concrete artwork depicting a prehistoric figure pushing a shopping trolley in The British Museum alongside an official looking label. He called it ‘Peckham Rock’ and it stayed in position for three days before being noticed and removed.
A number of replicas formed as wooden postcards were produced and one will be on offer at the auction. It carries a guide price of £200 to £300. Lots of people who love what he does, are willing to pay a lot for his work. At auction in 2008 a piece of work called Keep It Spotless was sold for just over £1 million!
The auction will be held at the saleroom in Plymouth on Wednesday, September 15 at 6pm.
