OKEHAMPTON Auctions easylive timed online auction starts on Wednesday, September 15 at 10am with lots ending from noon on Sunday, September 19.

For serious collectors of historic silver a late Victorian presentation shield fits the bill in a number of ways. It was designed by King Edward VII when he was still Prince of Wales and he commissioned renowned Edinburgh silversmith Thomas Smith to produce it.

It marks the Princes Honorary Presidency of The Smithfield Club of Londons famous Smithfield Livestock Market and was presented to Sir John Gilmour Bart, who had been made a Baronet by Queen Victoria in her 1897 Jubilee year. Measuring 19 ¾” x 11 ¾” it weighs 1665 grammes in all. The guide for this spectacular piece is £4750/ 5250.

Also in the silver section representing the illustrious Bateman family is a William Bateman silver spirit kettle on stand of unusual pumpkin shape with acanthus details. It carries his London hallmarks for 1822. The overall height is 13” and weighing a substantial 1515 grammes it has an estimate of £2250/2400.

Franz Zaver Bergman was born in Vienna Austria in 1861. He inherited a foundry business from his father and became famous for his cold painted bronze figures. The model number 2365 of a Jay bird has a factory stamp on the underside of the tail. It is 6 ¾” high by 11” long as has a reasonable guide of £150/250.

Troika was an Art pottery in St. Ives and Newlyn in Cornwall which operated from 1962- 1983. The sculptural style of Troika pieces soon gained market recognition, with the

London stores Heals and Libertys stocking their goods. Alison Brigden was head decorator from 1981-1983 and two vases with her monogram are priced at £60/100 each and are 3 /2” and 4” h.

The McIntosh firm in Kirkaldy Scotland was one of the foremost makers of contemporary furniture in Britain in the 1960s and 70s. Drawing influence from the popular Scandinavian designers of the time simple yet elegant pieces with clean lines were to the fore. A late 1960s teak sideboard has two pairs of cupboard doors flanking four drawers on raised legs. It stands 84” wide and 30” high and bids of £200/300 are anticipated.
