Auction saw increase in bidders from abroad

-

RENDELLS’ September auction found the saleroom packed to the gunwales with interesting and varied items after a large entry of just under 1800 lots.

These attracted a good level of interest with bidders attending the saleroom out bidding the internet for the first time since Covid.

Also noticeable was an increase in bidders from abroad including Hong Kong, Australia, China, USA, Switzerland, France, Spain and Ireland. Normality is beginning to return.

The jewellery section selling particularly well as gold remains at a nine year high and private buyers are visiting the saleroom again after so long.

Highlight being the £3,000 hammer price for a 1997 platinum diamond solitaire ring with a 1.22ct. modified round cut central stone flanked by small baguette stones.

In furniture, although the antique pieces continue to struggle there is a strong market for mid 20th century Scandinavian pieces typified by the hammer price of £1.050 paid for a 1.8m mid 20th century Danish teak and mixed wood wall unit by Hans J. Wegner (for Ry Mobler), with large double cupboard to top enclosed by a pair of sliding doors, over a base with two flights of three long graduated drawers, set on moulded supports.

Chinese ceramics continue to dominate, but for the first time in a long while a Japanese work in the form of a small 19th century Satsuma bowl decorated with panels depicting scholars and courtesans amidst landscape vignettes and gilt highlighting sold for a very healthy hammer price of £880.
