Discover a treasure trove of fine items
WHITTONS of Honiton’s next auction will be a Silver Sale on Wednesday, October 13 commencing at 10.30am.
Among the usual varied selection of items there will be a rare William and Mary silver lidded tankard with original coat of arms and crisp hallmarks to side, lid and handle.
It was made by a famous London silversmith by the name of Anthony Nelme who was the son of a yeoman from Muchmerkle in Hertfordshire. He was a renowned artisan of his trade and among his prolific patrons was Queen Anne and other aristocracy, and a pair of 40-inch altar candlesticks were made for Saint George’s Chapel in Windsor in 1694.
The tankard is a fine example of his work dated 1693 with a pre-sale estimate of £5,000 - £6,000.
Among the other lots is a huge pair of cast silver candlesticks measuring approximately 27 cms tall of Georgian design with cut corners, (est. £1,500 - £2,000); a collection of Christmas gift ideas such as caddy spoons, vesta cases, vinaigrettes and snuff boxes and a matching pair of heavy cast silver figures of grouse with textured bodies, ideal for the shooting enthusiast now the season has started, with an estimate of £2,000 - £3,000.
Viewing for this auction will be by appointment on Monday, October 11 and Tuesday, October 12.
The next auction after the silver will be an Enthusiast Sale on Friday, October 29 which will include a variety of classic motorbikes, such as a Royal Enfield trial bike in stunning condition, model planes, engines, tools, machinery, enamel signs and other sporting items.
The closing date for entries for this sale will be October 15.
The final auction of the year will be a Two-Day Fine Art and Antiques sale on November 24 and 25. This is always an exciting auction with Fine Silver, Jewellery and Watches on the first day, concluding with Fine Art, Antiques, Collectables, Furniture, Wines and Spirits.
The final date for entries into this auction will be November 2.
