Successful sale
JUST under 1,100 registered buyers on the telephone, internet and in the saleroom ensured success at Eldreds recent collectors’ sale.
A one-owner collection of 150 Zippo lighters lit the saleroom with interest, with the collection realising almost £2,500 under the hammer.
A rare and charming small collection of tiny hand-kitted clothing items, dated 1820, generated much interest and eventually sold for £300. Also, in the textiles section of the sale a brushed-silk top hat by Henry Heath Ltd, London, in original leather hat box showed that style is never out of fashion, selling at £490 and a small collection of 19th century and later sewing items, including a miniature sampler, had bidders competing to a high bid of £760.
Always generating interest from the many stories of bravery and dedication are the medals and military history lots and this sale was no exception, with a South Atlantic medal, miniature and related ephemera selling for £760.
Amongst a collection of tribal and ethnographic art was a Fijian hardwood throwing club ula which sold to a USA buyer for £1,450, and a single bottle of Fonseca’s Finest 1945 Vintage Port will make somebody’s Christmas at £620.
Coins and bank notes always interest collectors and this sale included a wide range dating from Edward III to more modern-day commemorative coin sets. Proving that numismatics is still an area of fascination, a large collection of Royal Mint coin covers, commemorating the Channel Tunnel, the XVII Commonwealth Games, anniversary and year proof sets raised an impressive £1,800 from a £600-900 estimate.
