Over 1600 lots at three-day sale

WITH over 1600 lots and estimates ranging from £80 to £8000*, Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood has something for everyone in its three-day Fine Art Sale from April 26 to 28.

The following lots give a flavour of the sale which can be viewed at the Okehampton Street Rooms, or on the website at www.bhandl.co.uk.

Among a single-owner collection of American sterling silver a five-piece tea and coffee service was made in Baltimore, weighs 80ozs and is estimated at £1000-1500*.

The jewellery and watches include an 18ct gold Patek Philippe Calatrava wristwatch estimated at £2500-3500* and an impressive square emerald and diamond ring estimated at £3000-5000*.

Of local interest, a life size bronze bust of Henry Frederick Willey, Mayor of Exeter in 1892, is estimated at £400-600* and from further afield a large pair of Benin bronze leopards have a similar estimate.

The picture section includes old master oils, miniatures, 19th century and more contempora­ry works like an amusing oil by Beryl Cook of Four Ladies. With Provenance to The Halcyon Gallery, the ladies are painted on a 162cm high screen and have an estimate of £30005000*. More traditiona­lly the John Frederick Herring oil on canvas of a Mare With Foal and Cattle was painted in the 19th century and has an estimate of £4000-6000*.

Furniture maker Robert Thompson was born in North Yorkshire in 1876, and today is often known as ‘The Mouseman’. His high quality artisan oak furniture was inspired by the 1920s revival in British Craftsmans­hip and the sale includes a private collection of 20 pieces of Mouseman furniture. Estimates range from £200-£2500* and include a 122cm high open bookcase at £800-1200*.

The Ceramic and Glass section includes a wide range of lots from all over the world. Among the older pieces and dating from the middle-ages, are two amazing 16th century Italian maiolica bowls. Both are beautifull­y decorated and they are estimated at £2000-3000* and £3000-5000* respective­ly.
