Showcase of exciting artists opens soon
THE Spring Exhibition with selected members of the South West Academy has firmly become one of the highlights of the Arts calendar. Carefully curated by Catherine Gillen, owner of The Brownston Gallery in Modbury, this annual exhibition showcases the high calibre of painting talent represented by the Academy.
Founded in 2000 by a small group of artists including Alan Cotton MBE to support and promote artists in the region, the Academy is now recognised as one of the most vibrant and exciting arts associations in the country.
Inspired by the beautiful scenery, stunning locations on land and sea, and of course our great way of life, each Academician brings something new and fresh to the collection, showing their wide range of differing styles of painting; from the gentle watercolours of David Norman to the bold brush strokes of Zoe Hyde, from the bold and zany portraits by Geoff Shillito and Carolyn King to the beautiful landscapes from Phil Creek and Alison Summerfield.
Also showing is Marcelle MiloGrey, winner of The Brownston Gallery Award, who is sure to make her mark with her striking paintings using egg tempera and oils with a delicate application of gold and copper leaf.
This year’s exhibition is uplifting, upbeat and fun and will be well worth a visit.
Also showing in the Brownston Studio is Arctic Impressions by Joanna Haskins, winner of the Fresh Talent Award at Arts University Plymouth. Jo has travelled extensively in the high Arctic and this exhibition is the result of her experiences there.
Her atmospheric oil paintings capture perfectly the raw majesty of that unique part of the world, presenting a landscape that is breathtakingly beautiful yet dangerous. This small collection highlights the very real effect that climate change is having on our world and encourages the viewer to think deeply about the future of our planet.
Both Exhibitions open on Thursday, March 16, 6pm-8pm. Please contact the gallery to be added to the guest list and for any further information.
