Successful March sale
LODGE & Thomas, The Truro Saleroom held its early spring Fine Art and Antiques auction on Friday, March 3. Auctioneer Guy Haskell was delighted to see many familiar faces, saying he was “pleased to see the saleroom full and buzzing with the expectations of an exciting sale to come.” It proved to be the case with a remarkably high successful rate of sales and pleasing overall outcome.
Antiquarian literature certainly captured everybody’s interest with a first edition of ‘Gaudy Night’ signed by author Dorothy L Sayers. The book received strong offers across the board and after an intense bidding war between those in the room and online buyers across the UK; it finally settled down at £2,100 to a collector in Wales.
A strong militaria section included a Lemonia military wristwatch circa 1939-45. Lemonia was one of the six watch manufacturers selected by the British government to supply wristwatches to the armed forces during World War II.
This watch was unusual because it was a chronograph example and bidding exceeded original expectations, with the hammer falling at £1,450.
Jewellery was well represented and the star of the show was a string of amber beads. Prised in the Far East and used in both traditional medicine and perfume, amber can often exceed initial hopes in the saleroom. The lot was hotly contested by two bidders and the final price eclipsed initial expectations achieving the sum of £1,800.
The saleroom was brimming with interesting furniture. Of exceptional quality, lots included a George II style walnut sofa, a pair of carved oak 17th century and a cream painted Parisian style cafe slatted table and four chairs. All of which performed well against estimates.
Lodge and Thomas is now accepting entries for its upcoming Fine Art, Antique & Collectables Sales, scheduled for April 14. If you wish to consign please call on 01872 270200 or email antiques@lodgeandthomas.co.uk.
