Caldwell is keen to reward Exeter fans

GARY Caldwell wants to reward Exeter City supporters with bragging rights and a Devon Derby victory in today’s high noon showdown against Plymouth Argyle.

The Pilgrims ran out 4-2 winners when the two clubs met earlier in the season in what was Caldwell’s second match in charge of the Grecians, but his side have come a long way since then.

Exeter have had some good results against the top teams in the division this season, but nothing would mean more to supporters than a win against their arch rivals at a sold-out St James Park this afternoon. But while there is sure to be a frenzied atmosphere at the Park, Caldwell knows it’s a time for cool heads if his players are to achieve their goal.

“There needs to be more composure and understanding of how you are going to win,” he said. “I have played in derbies before where you can get caught up - I played for Celtic against Rangers in a Cup Final where I have never been so nervous for a game of football in my life because of the pressure and trying to win and it resulted in a really inhibited, nervous performance from me and everyone. It was one of the worst games ever, but thankfully we won.

“I don’t want the players to feel like that on Saturday, I want them to feel free and as though they can play their game. Obviously there is pressure because it is a derby, but I don’t want to build it up too much. The game itself is enough to motivate the players and it is my job to give them clarity on how they are going to win it and allow them to play with real composure and freedom.

“Plymouth are a good team and they are at the top of the league for a reason. They like to play in their own half and I think that will be a decision for them in a big game: Under pressure, do they want to come here and try and play? It will be interesting to see how they set up, but we will be prepared for different ways.”
