Griffiths wonders if luck will change

- BY LEE HALL

Barnstaple Town manager Dave Griffiths is wondering just what his players have to do to win a game this season.

Another Saturday, another defeat, but Griffiths’ men could not have come any closer to ending their dismal record this season.

After losing their opening nine Southern League Division One South games, the FA Trophy provided some muchneeded respite for Griffiths’ beleaguered players at the weekend, and for a time they enjoyed a lead against Fleet Town last Saturday when Jack Jenkins curled home a brilliant free-kick.

However, a contentious penalty, awarded for handball, was then converted by Abdul Rajab in the first half and, after squandering a host of scoring opportunities, Barum were made to pay after the break when Meshach Williams scored Fleet’s winner.

Griffiths said: “We had four or five clear-cut chances, but in fairness, with no recognised strikers, we didn’t take them.

“We got in to some good scoring positions, had three oneon-ones, but we still couldn’t score.

“I couldn’t believe the referee awarded them a penalty, too. Our defender was just inside the box, their player crossed the ball from about 20 yards away and the referee gives handball when his hands are by his side.

“He couldn’t get out of the way of the cross, but his hands weren’t up, so I don’t know why the referee would give it.

“When I look back at the penalties we’ve conceded this season, none of them have been clear-cut.

“It’s unbelievable. I don’t know how many black cats we’ve run over, but we’re just not getting any luck.

“It’s so frustrating. You couldn’t write it. Even in training the players are hitting the bar!”

Griffiths and his players will go again this weekend as they attempt to claim that elusive first win of the season when they travel to 13th-placed Paulton Rovers in the league.

However, they will have to do it without George Nancekivell, Mike Humphreys and Steven Holland.

Griffiths added: “We are committed to getting it right. The players were absolutely gutted in the dressing room after Saturday’s game. They have given 100 per cent and have done everything but win the game.”

Barnstaple will also be without talented youngster Jack Rice-Lethaby, after he completed his move to Tiverton Town.

The attacking midfielder played for Barnstaple against Tiverton in the Southern League Challenge Cup earlier this month and impressed Tivvy boss Martyn Rogers.
