Goldsworthy enjoys dream debut
CORNISH cricket starlet Lewis Goldsworthy had a debut to remember when he made his first List A appearance for Somerset on Wednesday night – and starred with both bat and ball.
The 19-year-old ambidextrous all-rounder plundered 38 not out as the Cidermen racked up an impressive 183-3 against Glamorgan with Goldsworthy putting on a stand of 110 with Pakistan’s Babar Azam, who carried his bat and finished on 114 not out.
Somerset made light work of the Welshmen, bowling them out for 117 with Goldsworthy taking 2-24 off his four overs as the county won by 66 runs in the T20 Blast.
“It’s a dream come true, to be honest with you,” Goldsworthy said. “It wasn’t looking likely earlier this year, because we were going so well. But to get the opportunity to bat with Babar there is something I will remember for the rest of my life.
“He’s so calm and you can tell, being out there with him, what a class act he is. He was talking me through every single ball, so it was nice to be out there with such a top quality player.
“I was always going to do that (be the support) for Babar. The coach told me to go out and hit ones and twos as much as I possibly could, so that’s what I tried to do and to get Babar on strike, who was as destructive as he always is.”
Last weekend, Goldsworthy, who bats right-handed, but bowls left arm spin, was helping St Just to a three wicket win over Werrington, scoring 58 not out with the bat and taking 2-34 off his eight overs bowled.
“We got to the final last week, so it is weird playing there and then coming here and playing my first List A game,” the self-confessed Plymouth Argyle fan said.
“It’s something I have always dreamed of, growing up, so hopefully it is onwards and upwards from here.
“I think I was in the team to bowl, initially, but I was sent up the order to try and knock it around a bit. But I was ready to take my opportunity. Bowling is probably my main suit in white ball cricket, I’d say.”
