Lorry gets in a tight spot hauling RNLI vans

-

A LORRY carrying vehicles for rescuers ended up needing rescuing itself.

The truck carrying two vans belonging to the RNLI had just left the lifeboat service’s depot near Perranporth when it became wedged in a tiny lane in the hamlet of Penwartha.

The lorry, from Milton Keynesbased firm Nick Pelosi Ltd, was stuck for about six hours, and eventually removed using a recovery truck after failed attempts using tractors.

Locals shared photographs of the incident on Facebook. They said damage was caused to trees, walls and cables. It is feared the driver had followed his sat-nav and ended up in the tight spot.

The lorry got stuck sometime on Wednesday afternoon and it took until late into the evening to clear up the mess. Staff from Cornwall Council contractors attended to clear up.

Local resident Jo Daden said: “It was coming towards the top end of Penwartha Coombe, so had gone through Bolingy and up Penwartha Road, past the Old School and up to the cottages and farm where it eventually got stuck.

“I think it was about 4pm in the afternoon and it was eventually manoeuvred around the bend about 10pm using a pick-up/recovery vehicle. I think they tried to use tractors at some point as well.

“There were Cormac workers out during the evening and next morning clearing debris of branches that had come down from the vehicle coming through.”

One local had some sympathy for the driver, however. “Poor bloke,” they wrote on social media. “I feel sorry for him. Can’t really put the blame on him when he was following instructions.”
