United are hit for six by ruthless Spurs

-

MANCHESTER United suffered their joint heaviest Premier League defeat with a 6-1 home thrashing at the hands of Tottenham to further darken the bleak mood at Old Trafford.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men looked all at sea in their opening two games but sunk to a new low as Spurs ran riot on Jose Mourinho’s return to his former club.

The Norwegian might find his position coming under scrutiny after such an embarrassing defeat, while he will have to hope his side do significant transfer business today.

United had gone in front through another Bruno Fernandes penalty in the opening two minutes.

However it quickly descended into their worst defeat since Manchester City triumphed 6-1 here nine years ago.

They had to play 60 minutes with 10 men as Anthony Martial was sent off, but they were cut apart by a rampant Tottenham, with Son Heungmin and Harry Kane scoring twice and Tanguy Ndombele and Serge

Aurier also bagging.

Solskjaer accepted after the game that his side’s display was “nowhere near good enough”.

The Norwegian said “You don’t win games of football making individual mistakes, making a performance like that.

“When we get the start we did you think, ‘Yeah, we’ve got game where we want it’ and then you make bad decisions.

“It’s nowhere near good enough. I hold my hands up. It’s my decision to pick the team I did. Also as a squad, that’s not good enough for Manchester United.”

West Ham ended Leicester’s 100 per cent start to the Premier League season with an impressive 3-0 win at the King Power Stadium.

Manager David Moyes was again absent as he isolates following a positive Covid-19 test but the Hammers shone without him, easing to victory with goals from Michail Antonio, Pablo Fornals and Jarrod Bowen.

Antonio headed a 14th-minute opener before Fornals brilliantly took down a long ball to double the lead. Declan Rice then hit the bar after the break before Bowen wrapped the points.

Leicester showed some spirit late on but Harvey Barnes had a consolation goal disallowed following a tight offside decision.

Quickfire second-half goals from Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka and Nicolas Pepe at the Emirates Stadium condemned Sheffield United to their fourth successive league defeat from the start of the season.

David McGoldrick gave the Blades hope of claiming a first point of the campaign seven minutes from time but Arsenal held on.

Fulham also remain without a single point after losing 1-0 at Wolves.

Pedro Neto scored the only goal at Molineux after 56 minutes with a low strike across goal.

Southampton ran out 2-0 winners over West Brom at St Mary’s thanks to superb goals from Moussa Djenepo and Oriol Romeu.
