Truro get Taunton away in FA Cup
TRURO City’s reward for a dominant 4-0 home win in the FA Cup over Hungerford Town on Saturday is a tough away tie against Southern League rivals Taunton Town on Tuesday week.
Victory at the Cygnet Health Care Stadium on Tuesday, October 13, in the third qualifying round of the competition, would leave City just one win away from reaching the first round proper for only the second time in the club’s history.
They last did that in 2017 when under then manager Lee Hodges they lost out 3-1 to Charlton Athletic at the Valley after a fine performance.
A City victory in Somerset would also earn Truro another £5,625 in prize money to double what they have made already from their two qualifying round victories.
Both clubs are expected to be among the Southern League Premier Division South front-runners this season and their league meeting at Treyew Road last week was a predictably tight and fractious encounter that ended in a 1-1 draw with nine bookings.
The Cup clash is unlikely to be any different and will again feature a contrast in playing styles with a big Taunton side very much a direct ‘route one’ outfit, while Paul Wotton’s philosophy is to try and play out from the back.
The City manager said: “The way Taunton do it is a credit to Taunton They are good at it. It is not the way I want to play, but that does not mean its wrong. There are lots of different ways to win game of football.”
On Saturday’s win, Wotton said: “I am very hard on our boys, but I thought we were excellent today and dominant from the first whistle.
“The wind was a big factor. You have got to be brave enough to play out from the back and I thought we did it really well.
“It was a pretty comfortable afternoon in the dugout and we managed the game well.”
