THE South Devon Herd Book Society’s Autumn Show and Sale was a much welcomed live event when taking place last week, with a confident trade for both vendors and purchasers from across England, Scotland and Wales.

Bull averages seen at Worcester Livestock Centre jumped by £463 on the same sale in 2019.

In the sale ring on October 6, the top priced bull at 4,100 guineas was The Tully Partnership’s Waddeton Jamboree, a November 2018-born son of AI Z East Farm Javelin with a pedigree including Edmeston Homer 1 and Z Hawkley SAS Javelin. He moves from Brixham in Devon to Mr G Eustice from Hayle, Cornwall.

Achieving the next highest price at 3,800 guineas was Mr D L Irving’s polled bull, Z Enterprise Joshua, sired by Z Malthouse Hurricane and whose maternal grandsire was

Enterprise Condor. Travelling down from Dumfriesshire for the sale, this bull will be joining the Highgate herd near Lostwithiel, Cornwall.

Another Devon-based breeder, R J & C J Edwards from Tavistock, went on to sell Colcharton Brutus 4 for 3,700 guineas. Sired by Z Beckaveans Brutus, he now joins the Claridge family based at Middle Claydon in Buckinghamshire.

The female section was topped by two smart maiden 2018-born heifers, Brettles Gypsy 30 and Brettles Gypsy 31, selling at 2,300 guineas and 2,100 guineas respectively to A & C Farms, Oakham. Consigned by Mr & Mrs M Rushbrooke from Bewdley, Worcestershire, both heifers were sired by 2017 Performance Championship male champion, Z Eyton Trusty 3, and out of homebred Brettles cows.

A & C Farms sold a consignment of females from their Langham’s herd at the sale, comprising cows with calves, in-calf and maiden heifers. The cows topped at 1,500 guineas to

A E Howells & Son from Hereford. Two-year-old Langham’s heifers topped at 1,050 guineas for Langham’s Mimosa 17.

Top price in the maiden non-haltered heifer section was for one of a consignment of four from David Smallcombe Ltd, North Piddle,

Worcestershire, which sold to Bures Farm Partnership, Thetford, Norfolk for 1,050 guineas.

Auctioneer Clive Roads, from McCartneys who conducted the sale, said: “It was pleasing to see commitment and support from buyers at Worcester for the sale and the genuine competition that achieved excellent returns.”

Sale averages: Eight bulls £3,603; four cows with calves £1,457; two haltered maiden heifers £2,310; six non-haltered two-year-old heifers £962; twelve non-haltered maiden heifers £941
