MPs welcome spotlight on Westcountry

-

MPS in Cornwall have welcomed news the county will be hosting the prestigious gathering of world leaders for the G7 summit in June.

Steve Double, MP for St Austell and Newquay, said: “This is fantastic news and a huge opportunity for Cornwall on the world stage. This is likely to be the first global in-person event of this kind since the pandemic and I am very grateful to the Prime Minister for choosing to host this event in our Duchy, which shows we are very much at the heart of the government’s plans. It will really put Cornwall front and centre at a pivotal moment in the world’s history.

“It will be an incredible opportunity to showcase all Cornwall has to offer the world, not only our stunning natural beauty, but also our unique heritage and culture, our world class food and drink and our world leading creativity and innovation. A real opportunity and a big boost for our economy at the time we need it most. Putting our motto ‘one and all’ on the global stage to shine.”

St Ives MP Derek Thomas added: “In a year of recovery from Covid and a focus on how the world will cut harmful emissions – COP26 is also in Britain this year – we could not have a better time to host the world’s leaders for the G7 Summit. I said in my first ever election address that ‘we must not accept being the end of the line – we can be the start of something good!’ I still believe this and we must not miss the opportunity.”

Sheryll Murray, South East Cornwall MP, described the news as “a fantastic opportunity to put Cornwall front and centre on the world stage”.

Meanwhile, Truro and Falmouth MP Cherilyn Mackrory said: “I am pleased to see the Prime Minister putting Cornwall at the heart of the Government’s levelling up agenda by choosing our county to host this global event. From our verdant vistas and rugged coastlines, to our world class hospitality offer, unique culture and heritage, along with our cutting edge creative sector, I look forward to seeing Cornwall shine on the world stage at this important time in our history. This will be a real boost to Cornwall for our visibility and for our economy.”
