On Monday I have not got the time to be apathetic

IUSED to be apathetic… now I can’t be bothered! If this last year has taught me anything it’s that life is precious and not to waste any more of it promising myself I would ‘get round’ to doing things I’ve wanted to do for years.

How many times have I said things like,

“Ooh I must go on a diet/stop smoking /drinking” then immediately let myself off the hook with “It’s not a good time I’ve got a party/wedding/ holiday next week and I want to be able to enjoy myself.”

Or the old favourite, “Oh it’s a Wednesday it’s no good starting now may as well wait until Monday.”

Well no more. Never has there been a better time to get started. After all time is, for once, what I do have a fair bit of.

I began last year with the easy stuff like tidying the airing cupboard and the drawers to within an inch of their lives.

It’s a marvellously cathartic exercise but a week later they were back to resembling rummage boxes at a tabletop sale.

I decided socks were a lost cause too because its Sod’s law that immediately you get rid of the odd one its partner turns up in the airing cupboard sandwiched between a couple of towels.

As for plastic food containers I admit defeat. That’s hard-core. I continue to have a weekly stand off with the contents of the cupboard specifically earmarked for said containers, which spills its guts every time I open it. I’ve tried stacking them in order of size. Smaller ones inside bigger ones with all the tops piled up ….but that means unstacking them to get to the size you want then finding the right top. And it doesn’t matter how many went into that cupboard there is always one too many or one missing. Or even more mystifying one that fits nothing! No I’m no longer sweating any of that stuff... that’s small fry!

I’ve gone for the biggies. I’ve gone for the exercise in a big way. After all I only have to roll out of bed and switch on the computer for online classes live. I’m currently up to six a week! I’ve always wanted to be more fluent in a language. I did French, German and Italian at school but only well enough to remark on the cat sitting on the mat, ask for a return train ticket to Munich station and a Quattro Stagioni. That’s the four seasons pizza isn’t it? Or is it a car? Well I’m about to find out as I’ve enrolled for a Zoom Italian course.

That leaves painting. Not the walls but canvases. I was lucky enough to have a few lessons with a wellrespected artist a few years ago and loved it but let it slip.

It was fine whilst I was in his studio with all the paints and paraphernalia laid out but when I got home it was a case of setting up somewhere it wouldn’t be in the way. So killing two birds with one stone, I’m clearing the spare room and getting my easel up!

With reference to learning Italian I’m just thinking maybe I’d be better off learning Greek as my choirmaster has announced he’s planning a singing holiday in Greece next year and it would be good to manage a bit more than “Good morning” “good evening” and “Can I have some more ice for my ouzo?”

No I think I’ll stick with the Italian. So ciao for now… I’ll let you know how I get on kicking apathy into touch!
