SANDI’S HANDY GUIDE TO STAYCATIONS

-

AEXTRAORDINARY ESCAPES WITH SANDI TOKSVIG Channel 4, 9pm

TRAVEL show with a fresh twist, this sees broadcaster Sandi Toksvig explore the UK’s wildest and most beautifully designed holiday digs – accompanied by some funny women.

It’s a bit like getting live Tripadvisor reviews from giggly mates, who often get distracted by a gin and tonic.

There are four episodes, each with a guest – actors Alison Steadman and Jessica Hynes, Bake Off’s Prue Leith and comedian Sindhu Vee.

Sandi has the keys to some of the best staycation spots, all awe-inspiring properties built in stunning landscapes.

From a lighthouse cottage on a private island to a stunning tree house, every episode visits different hidden gems.

But while there are breathtaking vistas and plenty of facts and figures from the clever QI host, mostly the joy of this comes from the banter.

“I’ve got a great story about Napoleon’s penis,” says Sandi, cracking open a bottle of wine

while wrapped up in a blanket on a deckchair.

“I’ve got a swan in my fireplace!” shrieks Alison. “Is that a euphemism?” quips Sandi.

This first episode sees Sandi and the Gavin and Stacey star escape to Suffolk.

It’s the perfect place for naturelover Alison, who goes berserk over any creature and is happy to try a bit of whittling.

They discover the imposing 19-century Martello Tower on the Heritage Coast, before some cloud watching and a stay at a 17th-century thatched cottage with a difference – it has its very own moat.

During their travels, there’s plenty of time for Sandi to quiz Alison on her loves, life and career.
