Helston cancels Flora Day celebrations for second year running
HELSTON Flora Day has been cancelled for a second consecutive year due to Covid-19.
The decision comes after Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that the country will still be under coronavirus restrictions on Flora Day’s traditional date of May 8.
The showpiece event sees Helstonians of all ages dance through the town’s streets in front of packed crowds to celebrate the coming of summer. A statement from the Flora Day association confirmed the sad, if not unexpected, news. It read: “Helston Flora Day cancelled for the second year in a row due to Covid-19 Pandemic.
“Flora Day, which had been due to take place on Saturday, May 8th, will no longer take place due to ongoing coronavirus restrictions.
“The Helston Flora Day Association has been following closely the Government information and guidance on the current pandemic and wishes to ensure the safety of the public, participants, and Helston Town Band members.
“It is therefore with great sadness that the association has taken the decision to cancel the day for a second year.
“Dance secretary Nick Wills said a number of virtual events are in the planning to mark this year’s event and full details will be available on the Flora Day Association website at helstonfloraday.org.uk and on our Facebook Page. Please stay safe and we look forward to welcoming you to Helston in 2022.”
Last year was the first time in recent memory when the event that is hundreds of years old did not take place. The previous cancellation was thought to be during the Second World War.
