THE tables over which the world’s leaders will debate issues of global importance are to be made in Cornwall – with seven of the Duchy’s furniture makers vying for the job.

The UK Government has asked all seven, from Helston to Bude, to submit designs with Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s office deciding who will get the job.

Final designs chosen will be given a global platform and showcased around the world during the Summit in June.

The G7 – which is made up of the UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the USA and the EU – is the only forum where the world’s most influential and open societies and advanced economies are brought together for close-knit discussions.

From June 11 to 13 the summit will be held at Carbis Bay, St Ives, Covid security permitting. It is likely to be the first visit to Britain by newly elected US president, Joe Biden.

CEO of Cornwall Chamber of Commerce, Kim Conchie, described Cornwall as a “powerhouse for green innovation” and said he was delighted to see local suppliers being used for the event. “I’m pleased that we can give a global platform to the best of Cornish talent and it’s a great opportunity for designs to be showcased in meetings which will help set the agenda between the most powerful democracies on earth,” he said. “Good luck to all the designers!”

Cornwall Council leader Julian German said: “It’s vitally important that the whole of Cornwall benefits from hosting the G7 this summer, so I’m delighted that the Government will be using local suppliers and that the tables used during these historic talks between world leaders will be designed here.

“This is the perfect opportunity for us to showcase Cornish creativity and innovation on a global stage.”

Talks at the G7 are expected to concentrate on planning for a postpandemic world as well as dealing with climate change.

Cornwall was chosen as the venue for the event because of its worldleading potential for green technology.

The PM said: “All of the UK’s themes and priorities for our presidency of the G7 converge in Cornwall. As we revive the global economy after Covid, we want to help the world to build back better and greener.”
