Police warning to illegal off-road drivers

-

POLICE have warned off-road drivers driving dangerously on Devon’s moors, Dartmoor and Exmoor.

One incident yesterday saw drivers nearly crash into families walking with children.

And on Saturday, police took to Twitter to warn those who were driving off-road at Brendon Common, on Exmoor.

The tweet read: “Today we found ourselves with @DCPoliceRural_D on #Exmoor engaging with the @ ExmoorRangers & community members, around off-roading on #Brendon common. Intel gained.

“If you off-road illegally, we will catch you and you will reported and you may lose your vehicles.”

Police yesterday highlighted a similar incident on Dartmoor.

Posting an image of a sign which clearly states that vehicles are not allowed past a certain point, officers said off-roaders had paid little attention and nearly collided with members of the public with their children.

The police tweeted: “So to keep it equal we turned our attention to #Dartmoor.

“Today, off-roaders were witnessed in the #Cornwood area, narrowly avoiding members of the public walking with children. Having ridden past this sign which kind of says it all.

“Now we are aware of their route.”

The action has been praised by locals. One said: “Brendon Common has been a playground for offroad vehicles for years.”

Recently an off-roading incident resulted in an ancient burial site being ruined by bikers. Police said bikers were also breaching Covid rules on public footpaths.
